ABOUT
Hello! My name is Montserrat Madariaga-Caro. I'm a researcher, an educator, and a journalist. My pronouns are she/ella most of the time--I consider gender to be fluid and life to be nonbinary. I earned a PhD in Iberian and Latin American Literatures and Cultures from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at The University of Texas at Austin in the Summer of 2022. I'm an Assistant Professor at the Hispanic Studies Department at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY.

As a researcher, I work in the intersections of aesthetics and micropolitics, especially regarding literature and different forms of arts from Latin America/Abiayala (Indigenous name for Latin America). My current research focuses on the works of Mapuche poets and artists concerning micropolitics of life and care for the land, as well as the defense of the land from settler-colonialism, neoliberalism, and "terricidio"--the murdering of the land according to Mapuche leader Moira Millán.

As an educator, I teach students academic skills and relational abilities that speak to an appreciation of life, land, diversity, and coexistence on this planet. I encourage students to be curious learners and innovators while ethically responsible and empathetically grounded.
I was born in Chile near the ocean, where I have spent most of my life. I'm on a constant journey of unlearning settler ways of relating. I enjoy sharing space with other humans, plants, four-legged friends, birds, and other forms of life. I'm slowly learning how to care for a garden.

¡Hola! Mi nombre es Montserrat Madariaga Caro. Soy investigadora, educadora y periodista. Mi pronombre es ella, la mayor parte del tiempo--considero que el género fluye y que la vida no es binaria. Soy Doctora de Literatura y Culturas Iberoamericanas por el Departamento de Español y Portugués de la Universidad de Texas en Austin, Estados Unidos.
Como investigadora, trabajo en las intersecciones entre la estética y la micropolítica, específicamente trabajo literatura y diversas creaciones artísticas de América Latina/Abiayala (uno de los nombres Indígenas de Latino América). Mi investigación actual se centra en obras de poetas y artistas Mapuche en relación a micropolíticas de vida y cuidado de la tierra, como también la defensa de la tierra ante el colonialismo de asentamiento, el neoliberalismo y el"terricidio"--el asesinato de la tierra, según la luchadora y pensadora Mapuche Moira Millán.
Como educadora, enseño a les estudiantes competencias académicas y habilidades relacionales que hablan de una apreciación de la vida, la tierra, la diversidad y la coexistencia. Les animo a ser curioses e innovadores a la vez que éticamente responsables y empáticxs.
Nací en Chile cerca del océano, donde viví gran parte de mi vida. Estoy en un viaje constante de desaprender las formas colonas de relacionarse. Disfruto compartiendo con otrxs humanxs, plantas, amigxs de cuatro patas, pájaros, insectos, entre otras formas de vida. Estoy aprendiendo lentamente a cuidar y relacionarme con las huertas.
